  15. I. INSTALLATION (for CD-ROM version only)

  17. Minimum Requirements

  19. Pentium 75 (Pentium 100 recommended)

  23. DOS Based Installation
  24.  
  25. DOMINATION: EPISODE I - First Contact is contained in a single directory
  26. "DOMINAT1" on the CD-ROM. From MS-DOS or from a MS-DOS session within
  27. Windows 95
  28. simply change drives to your CD-ROM. For example, if your CD-ROM is drive
  29. D:
  30. then you would type at the command prompt:

  34. Then change directories to the DOMINAT1 sub directory:
  35.  
  36. D:\CD DOMINAT1

  38. Then to install DOMINATION: EPISODE I simply type INSTALL.EXE eg.

  40. D:\DOMINAT1\INSTALL.EXE
  41.  
  42. This will launch the installer which is menu driven. Install the game into
  43. the drive and directory of your choice. After the game is installed the
  44. sound setup program will be launched automatically to setup your sound.
  45. Follow the menus and setup your sound for sound system.
  46.  
  47. Windows 95
  48.  
  49. From Windows Explorer or from "My Computer" navigate into your CD-ROM drive
  50. and navigate into the DOMINAT1 directory on your CD-ROM. To install
  51. DOMINATION I
  52. run the install program INSTALL.EXE this will guide you through the
  53. installation
  54. of DOMINATION I and the sound setup.

  57. II. PLAYING THE GAME
  58.  
  59. DOMINATION I is controlled from the keyboard and has a great many options
  60. such as Heads Up Display, Wetware Gadgets and a lot of weapons. Here are
  61. the controls:
  62.  
  63. <ESC>               - Display Control Panel
  64. <LEFT ARROW>        - Rotate Left
  65. <RIGHT ARROW>       - Rotate Right
  66. <UP ARROW>          - Move Forward.
  67. <DOWN ARROW>        - Move Backward.
  68. <ALT>               - Enable Strafing.
  69. <ALT+D>             - Toggle Level of Detail on the fly.
  70. <SPACE BAR>         - Inspect/Use Object.
  71. <CTRL>              - Fire Weapon.
  72. <X>                 - Jump Up.
  73. <C>                 - Crouch Down.
  74. <LEFT BRACKET>      - Select Previous Weapon in Arsenal.
  75. <RIGHT BRACKET>     - Select Next Weapon in Arsenal.
  76. <F1>                - Toggle System HUD.
  77. <F2>                - Toggle Bio-Stats HUD.
  78. <F3>                - Toggle WETWARE HUD.
  79. <F4>                - Toggle Weapon Display HUD.
  80. <F5>                - Toggle Ammunition stores HUD.
  81. <F6>                - Toggle all HUDS.
  82. <SEMI COLON>        - Scroll Down on WETWARE Menu HUD.
  83. <APOSTROPHE>        - Scroll Up on WETWARE Menu HUD.
  84. <ENTER KEY>         - Toggle current WETWARE item On/Off.

  86. Game play is simple: kill everything, collect everything and when you find
  87. a computer hack around in it.
  88.  
  89. To exit a level you must find a computer workstation that has
  90. teleporter software and then engage the teleportation program.
  91. The only way for you to determine if a workstation has
  92. teleporter software is to "hack" around in the computer looking
  93. for commands and programs to execute with the DIR command. Once you
  94. have found the teleportation program "TELEPORTLEVEL" and launched it,
  95. you will undoubtedly need a password. The password can be found
  96. somewhere within the computer LOGS files. After teleporting you will
  97. see a statistics screen that will show you how you did on the level
  98. and your time verses the par time.
  99.  
  100. When you have finished the levels of a world then you will be
  101. teleported to the next world (long range teleport) and receive
  102. the thanks of of any remaining organic creatures. When you
  103. have finished the three worlds then you...I guess you'll just
  104. have to play!
  105.  
  106. III. TROUBLESHOOTING
  107.  
  108. Crashes in Windows 95
  109.  
  110. DOMINATION I is a 32-bit Protected mode application and likes to run in
  111. pure DOS rather than from a DOS session under Windows 95. So if you are
  112. having trouble running from a Windows 95 DOS session try re-starting in
  113. MS-DOS mode. You can start MS-DOS mode from the Windows 95 Start Menu by
  114. choosing shutdown and selecting restart the computer in MS-DOS mode or by
  115. rebooting the computer and pressing the F8 key during the start up phase.
  116.  
  117. If you are still experiencing crashes, try changing your EMM386
  118. line in your CONFIG.SYS file to no EMS. To do this, edit your config.sys
  119. file
  120. with any text editor and look for the line that reads EMM386.EXE. Add NOEMS
  121. to
  122. the end of this line. If there is RAM statment or any numbers then you must
  123. delete them. For example, if your EMM386.EXE line reads something like:
  124.  
  125. device=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 1024
  126.  
  127. then you would change it to:
  128.  
  129. device=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
  130.  
  131. *Sound Problems*
  132.  
  133. If your sound or music is not audible or doesn't sound correct
  134. then try running SETSOUND.EXE and re-selecting a different
  135. sound card for either digital or midi.
  136. If problems continue, try running the game in
  137. MS-DOS mode or changing the settings of your sound card and
  138. setting up the sound again with SETSOUND.EXE.
  139.  
  140. *Memory Problems*
  141.  
  142. DOMINATION II has a virtual memory manager and should run fine in
  143. 16MB of RAM. DOMINATION II may run on some systems with less than 16MB
  144. of RAM, but performance may be degraded.
  145.  
  146. *Speed Problems*
  147.  
  148. If you find that DOMINATION II doesn't run fast enough then try running
  149. the game from pure DOS and make sure you have a disk caching
  150. program such as SMARTDRIVE. Or buy a faster computer! You can
  151. also try switching to low detail mode (see section VI. below).
  152.  
  153. IV. USING REX++
  154.  
  155. *Programming*
  156.  
  157. REX++ is a programming language created specifically for the
  158. DOMINATION series. REX++ is based on the BASIC programming
  159. language with the free form syntax found in C. The programming
  160. language can be found within the virtual computers in the game.
  161. To use the language you must run the interpreter from within
  162. a virtual computer, this is accomplished by typing "REX++" at
  163. the virtual computer command prompt.
  164.  
  165. A manual on the use of the language and its keywords can be
  166. found on the DOMINATION CD-ROM under the name REXPP.DOC. Read
  167. this document using a MS Word compatible program such as
  168. MS Word or MS Wordpad. The manual will give you enough
  169. information and examples to create cool little programs.
  170.  
  171. *Troubleshooting*
  172.  
  173. REX++ gives you a lot of freedom when programming and it's possible that
  174. you
  175. might be able to create a program that crashes the language interpreter.
  176. Therefore, when you are programming in REX++ keep in mind that you are
  177. using a real language and a real IDE, so if you really try to write bad
  178. programs then you will probably be able to do so! Some common errors that
  179. can cause problems are:
  180.  
  181. 1. Defining variables more than once.
  182. 2. Sending parameters that are out of range.
  183. 3. Performing illegal or non-real mathematical calculations.
  184.  
  185. If you avoid the above pitfalls then you shouldn't run into any problems
  186. with
  187. REX++.
  188.  
  189. TIP: if you are going to do something risky then be sure to save your
  190.      position in the game first!
  191.  
  192. V. USING THE LEVEL OF DETAIL CONTROL
  193.  
  194. In the main control panel of the game under OPTIONS you can switch the
  195. level
  196. of detail from low to high. Low detail speeds up the game by flat
  197. shading the floors and removing the ceilings instead of using full texture
  198. mapping. Alas, there is a small penalty for doing this! There are a few
  199. secrets in the game that won't be so obvious without the texture mapping
  200. and
  201. floor lighting. So, to help you out we have added a quick Level of Detail
  202. Toggle,
  203. so that you can switch the LOD on the fly. While playing DOMINATION I,
  204. simply
  205. press <ALT+D> and the Level of Detail will toggle from low to high and
  206. back.
  207.  
  208. However, even without the extra hints a real Cyborg could carry out
  209. his mission!
  210.
